U.S. Cultural Values and Ideals 101
Course Description
It has been said that the United States isn't a formal culture as much as it is a set of ideas that the citizens subscribe to. These ideas have and continue to draw people from around the world. As a result, understanding American culture can be a challenge, since many of the traditional cultural markers such as shared physical features, religion, customs, etc. are often missing or inconsistent. This engaging and interactive course will inform and educate participants about the ideas that make up the foundation of American society.
Participants can expect to:
- Learn how to identify the hidden aspects of U.S. Culture
- Gain a better understanding of how to interact with Americans in social and professional settings
- Acquire useful and practical tips as to how to effectively integrate into U.S. society
Prior to the workshop, students will be required to fill out a questionnaire in order to further customize the workshop to their specific needs. Specific goals will be set accordingly.

Foundations on Effective Communication I
Course Description
This is the first of a two-part course that will emphasize the skills and techniques of effective communication and the application of those skills in a variety of contexts. Topics include the processes and barriers of human communication, the effects of self-perception, culture, gender, verbal and non-verbal messages on the process, and the impact of the communication process on teamwork and conflict. The course will provide students the opportunity to progress in gradual stages, gaining an understanding of the communication process along with confidence and experience in public speaking, listening and group interactions. Students will also learn how to communicate effectively in group settings and workplace settings.
Prior to the workshop, students will be required to fill out a questionnaire in order to further customize the workshop to their specific needs. Specific goals will be set accordingly.

Many people have fantastic ideas, but not everyone knows how to present them effectively. Students in this course will learn how to construct a compelling thesis argument, locate and arrange evidence to support their argument, and coherently express it, whether in written format or as a presentation.

Course Description
Students will learn how to better understand the landscape of identity politics in the United States. How do race, class, and gender impact one’s social position? We will look into some brief histories of how these categories of identity have operated in the U.S. and try to understand how they’re working now, using examples from popular culture. This course will help you to better understand a part of U.S. culture that often goes unspoken and can be confusing to navigate.
